DID YOU KNOW THAT CHILDREN FROM BILINGUAL AND MULTILINGUAL HOMES ARE THE FASTEST-GROWING GROUP OF STUDENTS JOINING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS RIGHT NOW?
Now, more than ever before, teachers are working with larger proportions of bilingual and multilingual learners (BMLs, EAL, ESL students) in their schools and classrooms; but sadly, most teachers have never had any training to work with these students.
The reality is that there are simply not enough EAL teachers to support all the BMLs in the school; and this now requires a new approach for teachers and administrators to work from.
This new approach employs a ‘multilingual mindset’ and ‘inclusive’ model that works to the strengths of the BML. Also, validating a student’s home language and culture (and even bringing this into the learning) has shown to improve achievement levels in students. However, implementing this approach requires a new mindset and a direct shift away from ‘English only’ policies within the English-medium school. In fact, using an ‘English-only’ approach is extremely damaging to students. It can turn a bilingual student into a monolingual as English takes over their home language. Instead, we want to help students maintain their home languages IN ADDITION TO learning high-level academic English at school.
JOIN THIS WEBINAR TO LEARN 5 SIMPLE STRATEGIES YOU CAN IMPLEMENT IMMEDIATELY TO TURN YOUR SCHOOL INTO AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING SPACE FOR YOUR BMLS
