As a school Leader, you make decisions that affect your learners each and every day. These decisions can impact students’ achievement levels, social emotional development and engagement. Did you know that many of the decisions you make also impact whether your bilingual and multilingual learners will maintain their home language(s) and cultural connections?
Many of the policies and practices that are used with BMLs actually go against the research and are based on myths instead of facts. As a result, BMLs are more likely to be referred to special education settings and can ‘fall through the cracks’ without the right support.
This course is designed to familiarize you with the essential ‘BML knowledge-base’ so you understand the important research and practices that will help BMLs thrive in their English-speaking or multilingual classrooms. Wherever you are based in the world, our course takes an international perspective and provides you with relevant research and insights from around the globe.
For the first 4 weeks, participants will take part in weekly learning modules that provide them with rich exposure to the ‘BML knowledge-base’. They will engage in online discussions, readings and quizzes to build their understanding. They will also have an opportunity to see a variety of practical strategies and videos related to the learning content. In the final two weeks, participants will use their own school context to frame their personal Culminating Project, which is a customized Action Plan.
The development of the Action Plans are created in conjunction with our Course Guide or Instructor (our Co-Founder). She leads participants, step-by-step, through the process of identifying key priorities for their school and students. She helps each participant set focused, targeted actions that will enable them to get significant results with their BMLs. Participants will walk away with their own Plan that is ready to be implemented with clear and simple steps.
Successful participants receive a certificate that reflects 30 hours of professional development. Through our partnership with Courses4Teachers, interested participants can apply for 2 units/credits from University of the Pacific in California.
