Maria’s parents ask her teacher, Sara, how long it should take Maria to learn English as a complete beginner. Sara’s not quite sure about the answer and this makes her feel uncomfortable.
After working with Tarek for the past two years, his teacher Michael feels he might just have a learning disability. He’s very good at speaking and listening but his writing skills are 2-3 years below his speaking levels. Michael knows that Tarek is not a native English speaker so he’s confused as to whether he should recommend him to special education for a psychological assessment or not.
Sara and Michal are good educators–they’ve just never received training to understand the specific language and learning needs of BMLs. Despite the fact that bilingual and multilingual learners (BMLs, ESL, EAL/ELLs) are now the fastest-growing student group in English-speaking schools today, most educators do not receive any training to understand bilingualism, multilingualism or the strategies that help BMLs thrive in school. This can lead to numerous negative consequences like: language loss, lack of academic progress, cultural disconnect and even inappropriate diagnoses of learning or language disorders.

Our courses, trainings and resources have helped educators all over the world improve their knowledge-base and teaching practises with BMLs. So many of our educators have gone on to make transformational changes to support their learners. They’re helping families to maintain their home languages while at the same time, adding high-level English to their language repertoires. Teachers and school principals are changing policies, procedures and welcoming new teaching approaches. Educators from kindergarten to secondary school are elevating their expertise with new strategies for planning, teaching and assessment. They’re taking action to ensure instruction is more equitable and inclusive for their BMLs.
